Chapel Discussion Questions - 5/4/16

Yesterday in chapel we were all excited to finally see a picture of baby Cora!  We've been waiting for her birth all school year and God was good to bring her into the world just in time for us to talk about her birthday and the fact that God is eternal.  Everyone on planet earth has a birthdate--a day when his or her life began, but God does not!

Because God is eternal and has no beginning and no end, He has no birthday.  He's the only one we know without one.

Psalm 90:2-6  Easy-to-Read Version

You were God before the mountains were born,

before the earth and the world were made.
You have always been and will always be God!
You bring people into this world,

and you change them into dust again.
To you, a thousand years is like yesterday,
like a few hours in the night.

Our life is like a dream that ends when morning comes.

We are like grass

6
that grows and looks so fresh in the morning,

but in the evening it is dry and dying.

Discussion Questions:

1. When did your life on earth begin?

2. What does it mean that God is eternal?

3. How can you thank God for giving His children the free gift of eternal life?

Happy Birthday, baby Cora!  We look forward to watching you grow up to love God and receive His free gift of eternal life!

Chapel Discussion Questions - 4/27/16

Today in chapel Eiki, one of the Mosaic Church interns, talked to us about a time when she was young and she disobeyed her parents.  Eiki was looking forward to playing with her best friend, Kate, but her parents had asked her to clean her room before Kate came over.  Eiki did not enjoy cleaning her room, so she didn’t do it!  As a result, her parents could not allow her to play with Kate that day.

Noah, a character in the Bible, was a good man who obeyed and loved God.  When God saw that the entire world, except Noah, was disobedient and evil, He decided to flood the world and destroy it.  But God saved Noah and his family by allowing them to go inside a big boat called an ark.  God was both fair (or just) and loving.  God punished the people who were evil and He saved Noah.  After the flood was over and Noah came out of the ark, God placed a rainbow in the sky to remind everyone of His promise to never again destroy the earth with a flood.

 John 3:16 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

16 Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life.

God is still fair, just, and loving.  The good news is that God sent His son Jesus to the world to take the punishment for our disobedience.  On our own, we could never be good enough to go to heaven because all of us have done things that displease God.  God loves us so much that He allowed Jesus to die on the cross for us.  We deserve punishment for our sins, but Jesus took our place!

Discussion Questions:

1.    What does it mean to you that God is fair/just?  What does it mean when someone is fair/just?
2.    What does it mean to you that God is good? What does it mean when someone is good?
3.    Why is it important that God is both just and good?  Why is it important for us to be both just and good?

I’m thankful that God is both just and good and that He sent Jesus to pay for my sin!

Blessings,

Chapel Discussion Questions - 4/20/16

During chapel today, Pastor Tony talked about God’s purpose for our lives.  He asked the students what their dreams are and what they want to be when they grow up.

He reminded us about Joseph, an Old Testament character who had dreams of becoming a special person.  Although he went through a lot of difficulties in his life, including being hated by his brothers, the Lord was with Joseph.  He eventually became a ruler in Egypt and saved many people from starving during a severe famine!  Joseph had to endure being sold by his brothers as a slave and false imprisonment by his boss. He told his brothers that, “you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50:20”

Pastor Tony said that God designed each of us to be a unique, special person and that we shouldn’t worry about being different from other people around us.  We should read our instruction book, the Bible, and get God’s help to figure out what God has in mind for us to do and to be.

Read the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50.

Discussion Questions:

1.     What would you like to be when you grow up?
2.     How was Joseph special (he dressed in a multi-colored coat, he was his father’s favorite son, and he had dreams about becoming a person to whom people would bow.
3.     Who do you think is the person that God wants you to become?

Chapel Discussion Questions - 4/13/16

This week’s chapel theme was “God has a Purpose for Families."  Anni, one of the Mosaic Church interns, led our thoughts and brought a baby doll, who we pretended was real.  She asked the students what the baby would do when it was hungry, tired, or needed a bath?  She reminded us that babies do not ask for food or find their own.  Since they cannot walk they cannot get into bed when they’re sleepy.  They are totally dependent upon their families to take care of them.  Thankfully, God created families to take care of babies, because we were all once babies!  Our families are small groups of Jesus-followers who love each other, therefore we need to take care of each other.

Anni read I Timothy 5:4, which addresses needy people (widows) who had no one to care for them:

1 Timothy 5:4Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, the first thing they need to learn is this: to show their devotion to God by taking care of their own family. They will be repaying their parents, and this pleases God.

The students considered ways that they could help out their family members who take care of them.

Discussion Questions:

1.    How does the Bible say that children and grandchildren can show their devotion to God?
2.    Name some things your parents do for you.
3.    What are some ways you could help your family members out this week?

Blessings to you and your entire family,

Chapel Discussion Questions - 4/6/16

Yesterday in chapel we began thinking about the theme of “Purpose.”  Pastor Tony talked about role models and asked the students who some of their favorite role models are.  Parents, teachers, and famous people were some of the people mentioned that the students look up to and want to imitate.

Pastor Tony taught us that God wants us to be like His son, Jesus, and that Jesus was the best role model that ever lived!  While Jesus was living on the earth, He showed kindness and love for everyone He met.  He showed us what it means to sacrifice (giving up something you could use yourself).  Jesus was and is patient and respectful of us.  He wants us to follow Him, but He never forces us.  He allows us to make our own decisions to do that.

Here’s our new memory verse for the month:

Ephesians 1:10 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
God’s goal was to finish his plan when the right time came. He planned that all things in heaven and on earth be joined together with Christ as the head.

Discussion Questions:
1.   What important part of our bodies is inside your head, and what does it do? (Our brains tell our body parts what to do)
2.   Who does our memory verse say is our head?  (Jesus Christ)
3.   What are some things you could do to imitate Jesus today?

Many Blessings,

Chapel Discussion Questions - 3/23/16

Today’s chapel speech was given by Marco, who talked about the authority of the Bible in a way that engaged us!  He began by asking us to think about who is the smartest, most powerful, and best?  Of course the students all knew that the answer is God!

Marco talked about the fact that God loves us so much that He gives us clear messages that we can see every day:  When the sun comes up God is saying, “Good morning!”  When the moon comes out at night God is saying, “Good night.”  As long as we have been alive, God has always allowed day and night to keep happening.  God has continued to send us the message about how faithful He is and how He never changes!

God has also given us important messages in the book that He had written for us, the Bible.  In the same way that some mothers write “I love you,” and place the message in their children’s lunchboxes, God has written a love letter, the Bible, to all the people in the world.  God tell us how much He loves us in the Bible!  Because God made us and He knows all about us, He has also recorded answers to all our important questions in the Bible.

When we listen to the things the Bible says and try to obey them, we develop a better and closer relationship with our heavenly Father, God.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 Easy-to-Read Version
“But you should continue following the teaching you learned. You know it is true, because you know you can trust those who taught you. 15 You have known the Holy Scriptures since you were a child. These Scriptures are able to make you wise. And that wisdom leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by God. And all Scripture is useful for teaching and for showing people what is wrong in their lives. It is useful for correcting faults and teaching the right way to live. Using the Scriptures, those who serve God will be prepared and will have everything they need to do every good work.”

Discussion Questions:
1.    How do you think the Bible is like a love letter from God?
2.    How does God know the answer to life’s important questions?
3.    How can you become a closer friend to God?

Let’s all listen to what God is saying to us!

Happy Easter!

Chapel Discussion Questions - 2/3/16

Today in chapel we began learning about Moral Order (God's rules that maintain order in the world).  Pastor Tony brought some of his favorite family board games and talked about needing the instructions in order to be able to play the games.  He pointed out that it's no fun when eveyone makes up their own rules to the games!

Since God created the universe, He is the one who established the rules that keep the world running smoothly.  God the Father; Jesus, the Son; and the Holy Spirit were all present when the world, including people, was created, so they know what's best for us.  They even saw to it that people had access to an instruction manual:  the Bible!

God gave us some very basic rules for life in Exodus 20.  These are called the 10 Commandments:

1. Put God first
2. Worship God only
3. Use God's name with respect
4. Remember God's day
5. Respect your parents
6. Dont hurt other people
7. Be faithful in marriage
8. Don't steal
9. Don't lie
10. Don't be envious of others

Discussion Questions:
1. When playing a game, why are rules important?
2. Name some rules that your family follows at your house.
3. Who is the author of the rules for life and where can we find those rules?

Thank you, Tony, for an engaging lesson.  May we all read God's instruction manual so we will know how to do life!

Blessings,

Chapel Discussion Questions - 1/27/16

Today in chapel Pastor Melvin talked about "The Great Commission" that Jesus gave his followers (and us!) in Matthew 28.

Matthew 28:19-20 Easy-to-Read Version

19 Go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will continue with you until the end of time.”

He explained that a commission is a "command to act," and that Jesus promised to be with us when we obey him.  He's always there to help us!
Just as it helps to have a parent help you learn how to ride a bike or cook, Jesus encourages and helps us when we try to help other people follow Him.

Discussion Questions:
1. What does commission mean?
2. What does it look like to have Jesus as your cheerleader? (Matthew 28:18-20 - Jesus promises to be with you)
3. Who will you get a chance to meet this week and be a voice of encouragement?

Blessings,

Chapel Discussion Questions - 1/20/16

Today in chapel Pastor Tony talked about balloons and being filled with the Spirit.  Balloons are designed for the purpose of decorating and having fun.  We can make balloon animals, toss balloons in the air, and do other fun things with them.  But balloons only fulfill the purpose for which they were designed if they are filled with air.  Flat balloons are lifeless and of no use!
Similarly, God's children need to be filled with something in order to be all God designed us to be:  the Holy Spirit!  When we become followers of Jesus, God fills us with the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 3:16 Easy-to-Read Version
"You should know that you yourselves are God’s temple. God’s Spirit lives in you."
Questions:
1.  Discuss fun things to do with a balloon and what to do with a balloon with no air in it.
2.  Who are three parts of God?  (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)
3.  How can a person become filled with the Holy Spirit?  (Believe in Jesus)
Thank you, God, for allowing your spirit to live in us!

Chapel Discussion Questions - 1/13/16

Happy New Year everyone!

Today we enjoyed our second chapel for 2016.  Last week we worshipped in song and talked about what the songs helped us remember about God, Creation, and Man.  We learned a lot during the first semester!

Today Melvin got us thinking about the gifts that God gives all of his children.  Here's a scenario:  Imagine that your cousin is eating apple pie at your house and accidentally spills the entire piece of pie on his shirt.  How would you react?

Apple Pie Accident:

“I told you…” - Prophecy
“Let me help you…” - Serving
“I’ve researched this…” - Teaching
“It won’t be that bad. it happened to me too…” - Encouragement
“Here’s a new shirt and more apple pie for everyone…” - Giving
“Everything is AWESOME…” - Leadership
“My heart is broken…” - Mercy/Kindness
1 Corinthians 12:7 New Living Translation
"A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other."

Family Questions:

1) Read Romans 12:6-8 and discuss gifts that each family member has.
"6In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly."

2) Imagine your are having a family meal together and a relative spills their apple pie on themselves, how would you respond to them? Would you help clean up? Would you give them a new shirt? Would you find a way to encourage them? Discuss this situation as a family.

3) Read 1 Corinthians 12:7 and discuss in which ways we all can help around the house. Around our neighborhood? Around our school? Around our church?

How wonderful it is that God has gifted each of us so that we can help others!
Blessings,
Jan Rogers, Director
