Chapel Discussion Questions - 1/27/16

Today in chapel Pastor Melvin talked about "The Great Commission" that Jesus gave his followers (and us!) in Matthew 28.

Matthew 28:19-20 Easy-to-Read Version 

¹⁹ Go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. ²⁰ Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will continue with you until the end of time.”

He explained that a commission is a "command to act," and that Jesus promised to be with us when we obey him.  He's always there to help us!
Just as it helps to have a parent help you learn how to ride a bike or cook, Jesus encourages and helps us when we try to help other people follow Him.

Discussion Questions:
1. What does commission mean?
2. What does it look like to have Jesus as your cheerleader? (Matthew 28:18-20 - Jesus promises to be with you)
3. Who will you get a chance to meet this week and be a voice of encouragement?

Chapel Discussion Questions - 1/20/16

Today in chapel Pastor Tony talked about balloons and being filled with the Spirit.  Balloons are designed for the purpose of decorating and having fun.  We can make balloon animals, toss balloons in the air, and do other fun things with them.  But balloons only fulfill the purpose for which they were designed if they are filled with air.  Flat balloons are lifeless and of no use!

Similarly, God's children need to be filled with something in order to be all God designed us to be:  the Holy Spirit!  When we become followers of Jesus, God fills us with the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Easy-to-Read Version

"You should know that you yourselves are God’s temple. God’s Spirit lives in you."

Questions:

1.  Discuss fun things to do with a balloon and what to do with a balloon with no air in it.

2.  Who are three parts of God?  (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)

3.  How can a person become filled with the Holy Spirit?  (Believe in Jesus)

Chapel Discussion Questions - 1/13/16

Happy New Year everyone!

Today we enjoyed our second chapel for 2016.  Last week we worshipped in song and talked about what the songs helped us remember about God, Creation, and Man.  We learned a lot during the first semester!

Today Melvin got us thinking about the gifts that God gives all of his children.  Here's a scenario:  Imagine that your cousin is eating apple pie at your house and accidentally spills the entire piece of pie on his shirt.  How would you react?

Apple Pie Accident:

“I told you…” - Prophecy

“Let me help you…” - Serving

“I’ve researched this…” - Teaching

“It won’t be that bad. it happened to me too…” - Encouragement

“Here’s a new shirt and more apple pie for everyone…” - Giving

“Everything is AWESOME…” - Leadership

“My heart is broken…” - Mercy/Kindness
1 Corinthians 12:7 New Living Translation  ^"A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other."

Family Questions:

1) Read Romans 12:6-8 and discuss gifts that each family member has.

^"6In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. ⁷ If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. ⁸ If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly."

2) Imagine your are having a family meal together and a relative spills their apple pie on themselves, how would you respond to them? Would you help clean up? Would you give them a new shirt? Would you find a way to encourage them? Discuss this situation as a family.

3) Read 1 Corinthians 12:7 and discuss in which ways we all can help around the house. Around our neighborhood? Around our school? Around our church?

How wonderful it is that God has gifted each of us so that we can help others!
